Stakeholder Engagement on Climate Justice

PRESED held a two-day multi-stakeholder engagement workshop on climate justice to outline strategies for achieving higher climate ambitions. Key stakeholders from Academia, the Local Government, NGOs, CSOs, FBOs, and other Relief Agencies were engaged in dialogue sessions to strategize for increasing Ghana’s resilience to climate change impacts now and in the future. The discussions were centered on pollution in the city and its impact on climate change as well as on how to influence policies to drive community-based actions. Traditional Authorities and opinion leaders from four communities in the Greater Accra region were engaged for action. These are James Town, one of the oldest Accra communities; Agbogbloshie, a commercial community that generates the city’s largest e-waste dump, Chorkor, a coastal community and Korle Gonno, a suburb of Accra which has the biggest Lagoon. The outcomes of the discussions will inform the Presbyterian Relief Services and Development to implement strategies that will:

Contribute to the identification of air pollutants in the capital city of Ghana and assess their impacts on human health and the environment.
Promote greening/reforestation by the Church and communities as a means of mitigating climate change and its effects on the city
Promote the use of gas and other methods of singeing/smoking meat and fish to reduce the health risk of the citizens.

The event was Facilitated by Dr. Benedicta Fosu-Mensah of the Institute of Environment and Sanitation Studies (IESS), University of Ghana, and funded by ACT-Alliance.

Fighting COVID-19; Access to water

Nyekornakpoe community receives water Access to safe water is critical to the health of families in Ghana. It takes concerted efforts of all partners to ensure the safety of all especially the vulnerable in the remotest areas in society. Nyekornakpoe, is the fifth community in the Akatsi South District of the Volta Region to receive a mechanized borehole as part of the collaborative efforts of PRESED and Ghana Outlook UK; to fight the covid-19 pandemic and improve on overall hygiene in beneficiary communities.

Industries (SPIL) receives new equipment

The agro-industry provides the crucial farm-industry linkage which helps accelerate agricultural development by creating backward linkages (supply of credit, inputs and other production enhancement services) and forward linkages (processing and marketing), adding value to the farmer’s produce, generating employment opportunities, and increasing the farmer’s net income. This in turn motivates the farmer for better productivity and further opens up possibilities of industrial development. The Domeabra Agro-Processing center has acquired new equipment to add value to farm products to enhance production to meet market demand targeting mostly female headed households.

Scholarship Scheme; Support to Brilliant but needy Students

Education is very necessary for each and everyone in order to improve knowledge, way of living as well as social and economic status throughout the life. It helps a person to get knowledge and improve confidence level all through the life. It plays a great role in our career growth as well as in the personal growth. PRESED, with its limited resources supports brilliant but needy students to have access to a better life through education. The organization, with the support from the Development and Social Services Department and through the benevolence of Individuals, Akuaba Foundation and the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, supported two females; namely Salomey Kuma; Bsc Medicine, University of Ghana; Legon, and Mariamma Musa; with laptops, accommodation fees and an allowance of One Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHs 1,000.00) each for their upkeep on campus. The organization is thus reaching out to all and sundry who will be willing to support these students and many other brilliant students but financially poor to pursue their dreams and become responsible people who will promote development especially for the future generation.

More Communities Get Mechanized Borehole

More communities especially in rural Ghana, lack access to portable water, even more critical to curb the effects of the COVID-19 crisis faced globally. In responding to the development needs of the people, two mechanized boreholes have been provided and commissioned for the people of Ahaigbekope and Gblidemekope in the Akatsi South and North Districts of the Volta Region. This was made possible by the Presbyterian Relief Services and Development (PRESED), in partnership with the Ghana Outlook, a UK-based Non-Governmental Organization. The two farming communities which have been suffering from acute water challenges over the years compelling women and children to travel far in search of water expressed their joy for the opportunity. Women and children have been depending on a stream and river which they normally share with cattle and other animals. The boreholes will help solve the water supply challenges of the people in the two towns and the neighboring communities, especially school children and women. Again, the project will promote and sustain hand hygiene in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
